Press Release – 4th November, 2013
Manly Drug Education & Counselling Centre (MDECC) is celebrating 40 years of service to our community at it’s AGM on the 14th November, 2013.
Proudly, MDECC has retained its name and the location that it started with back in 1973. Apart from the name and the location, MDECC bears very little resemblance to the Centre that had its origins as a youth drop-in centre all those years ago.
Over the years MDECC has matured into a unique service that works with young people (aged 12 – 28 years), their families and the broader community to minimise the harms associated with alcohol and other drug use.
We now have 3 distinct programs operating across the continuum of drug use; Health Promotion, Targeted Intervention and Counselling & Treatment. MDECC is quality accredited by the Australian Council on Health Care Standards.
MDECC continues to work in partnership with local councils, health services, police & criminal justice system, schools and other non government organisations to make a difference in our community.
It is appropriate that MDECC and the Sydney Opera House should share a 40th year anniversary. MDECC, though in the shadow of the Opera House, remains an icon on the Northern Beaches providing a specialised range of alcohol and drug services to the local community since 1973.
Mr Graham Stone, MDECC Chairperson said “Over the past forty years there have literally been many thousands of young people and their families accessing our service. The number of staff who have worked for MDECC over this period is unclear, but what is clear is the quality and skills of the MDECC workforce both past and present.”
“MDECC treasures the community support we have and looks forward to many more years of providing a much needed service for young people and their families affected by alcohol and other drugs.”
